The seventh generation of Tannoy’s best-selling loudspeaker range is celebrated with a fresh new style that stands out from the budget loudspeaker crowd. A new luxury wood-grain effect finish, in a choice of Walnut, Light Oak or Black Oak, allows Mercury 7 to harmonise with any room décor, while dark cloth grilles add a clean and sophisticated style.

Mercury 7.2 is a true audiophile standmount loudspeaker, combining high performance sound with a luxury finish to set the standard at the price. Suitable for all listening rooms where an accurate, articulate and high fidelity performance is required, the 9.4 litre rear ported cabinet packs a big punch thanks to its 152mm (6.00") mid/bass driver. Partnered with the series’ new 28mm (1.10") soft dome tweeter and audiophile crossover, the Mercury 7.2 offers a big sound and even bigger value for money.

The easy to drive nominal 8 ohm load and high 89dB efficiency means the Mercury 7.2 can be partnered with a broad range of quality amplifiers, from low-power tube designs to monster solid state transistor models. Up to 200 Watts peak power handling capacity ensures Mercury 7.2 won’t suffer from musical compression or distortion for louder listening sessions. Its wideband frequency response from 42Hz up to over 32kHz and wide dynamic range makes Mercury 7.2 perfect for High Resolution Audio while retaining exceptional reserve for standard audio formats.

To make the latest generation of Mercury even better than the award-winning Mercury Vi series required completely new driver designs. The new Mercury 7 mid/bass drivers are fitted with a significantly larger than previous models, enabling them to deliver deeper bass with greater punch than any competitor design.

Cone Material

Cone Material

The Mercury 7 cone uses an updated version of Tannoy’s proprietary multi-fibre cone material with a smoothly sculpted profile for better dispersion and more accurate midrange reproduction. The light and stiff cone delivers fast, tight bass while the new computer optimised rubber surround provides exceptionally high excursion without over-damping the cone.

Tweeter

Tweeter

The new 28 mm (1.10") Mercury 7 tweeter uses a soft woven polyester dome that is coated to Tannoy’s exacting specification with a micro layer of nitro-urethane. This special lamination process damps the dome and pushes its break-up frequencies far beyond the audio range. The trebble is smooth and detailed with an extended frequency response to over 32 kHz.

Technology

Technology

Throughout the signal path, Mercury 7 benefits from technologies trickled down from Tannoy’s high-performance and luxury speaker ranges. The crossovers employ close tolerance components throughout, including low-loss laminated iron core inductors for seamless integration between drivers. Internal wiring is silver-plated Oxygen Free Copper and speaker terminals utilise Tannoy custom designed gold-plated binding posts.

Construction

Construction

Mercury 7 cabinets are the series’ most acoustically neutral enclosures to date. By creating a rigid, low resonant foundation for the drivers, has always been the starting point for Mercury models, ensuring reduced cabinet colouration giving a natural and more spacious sound.

Cabinet Material

Cabinet Material

The new cabinets also boast extensive use of Tannoy’s Differential Materials Technology (DMT) compound. Used in critical areas, such as driver to cabinet interface and crossover component mounts, this high tech material damps unwanted vibrations and further reduce colouration. As with DMT application in Tannoy’s luxury and Prestige loudspeaker ranges, the treatment delivers a crisper, more open sound with enhanced detail and micro-dynamics.
